I’ve had a few minutes on my hand and have whipped up a few sketches. I only had a pen to hand, and get scared by how permanent pen is as a medium so never usually use ink. Practising my line drawing also, which is something I’ve never really done before.

Aaliyah’s birthday today and what better way to remember her than to listen to Groove Chronicle’s masterful sampling of her on ‘Stone Cold’, which is my third favourite ‘stone cold’ thing in the world (1. Steve Austin 2. corpse of Jimmy Savile)? Yes, yes, post an ACTUAL Aaliyah tune, but that would just too predictable.

Simon Reynolds wrote something very clever about this tune, something about how the word ”Desire” is isolated from the original vocal and rendered melancholic and thwarted by the mournful jazz-sax and rumbling reese bassline - then he probably said it was all like a metaphor for the death of UK Rave or something. Did he also write that, once you’ve heard this tune once, the ”Desire” of the singer becomes the ”Desire” of the listener (you see?!) to transition from the delicate simmer of the intro to the ruffneck bass and snapping skeletal drums of the drop? Yeah, maybe, but I wrote it here and many of you won’t have even read any Simon Reynolds, so I claim it. It’s like I’ve sampled his words and given them a melancholic twist by rendering them in broken english and mixed metaphors etc. META.

Out to Oneman, one of the biggest fans of this tune I ever met. Out to Mary Anne Hobbes too, for having El-B play a guest mix on her show which I used to listen to above El Gordos in my pants on ecstacy smoking horrible spliffs. I would ”zone out” in a rather embarrassing way by bowing my head and lifting my arms, the forefingers pointing forwards, towards the horizon of lived experience. Then I would have a wank that lasted six hours over a single 2 minute wmv downloaded off Limewire, as was the style at the time.

Shout out also to Mella Dee of the Mista Men who said he gets emotional just thinking about the bit where this tune goes dark - cos that’s true and it also makes me think that an interesting thing about this tune is that its a dance tune that climaxes emotionally by turning ‘dark’. Whereas a lot of trance tunes, say, rely on the moment of utmost major-key magnificence to wring euphoria out of a listener, this tune disturbs the placid emotional waters of the jazzified intro with a straight-up menacing bassline. I suppose this is quite common in hardcore uk music (and dance music generally… and music generally but lets not dilute the argument too much) - the moment of euphoric release comes with a nasty, dark bassline that sounds like the musical equivalent of a truncheon beating.

I guess this is partly because we, trained listeners to UK hardcore music (jungle, garage, grime etc.) almost desire the darkness more than anything else. We love the samples of RNB divas, the dreamy euphoric chords - but without the dark bass its all for nothing. We desire the emotional reaction, even if that emotional reaction might almost be classified as ‘negative’ in the day to day world. I know this is a global thing but there does seem to be something quintessentially British about managing to channel a euphoric movement like rave into extremely dark and melancholy back-alley, rain sodden and lit by street lamps (Burial is maybe the ultimate example of this - his miserabilising of the raptures of US Garage house into fractured, emotionally raw ambient pieces).
